What is achieved by scanning Color Prints over 300 dpi?

This is the 6x4 inch print scanned at 60 dpi, shown for the purpose of establishing scale for the following images taken from it.

The 400 dpi image is repeated here (from your browsers cache), and then the new 500 dpi and 600 dpi images for comparison.
